MWUN, BOAN partner to improve waterway operations

Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) and Barge Operators Association of Nigeria (BOAN) have inaugurated a high-powered steering committee to harmonise the activities and operations of Barge operators in Nigerian waters.

Chairman of the committee, Ahmed Mohammed, at a press conference, said the committee would harmonise the activities of badge operators in the industry, discuss the operational guidelines of using the waterways infrastructure and manpower for effective and efficient barge operations.

Also, President General of the MWUN, Adewale Adeyanju, described the collaboration as a “marriage of convenience” that has come to stay, adding that it will also make the government take them serious in their operations.

On his part, the President of BOAN, Edeme Kelikume, said the economic role barge operations play in the nation and maritime industry at large was unquantifiable.

He urged the committee to be disciplined as well as take their task seriously and make it work, adding: “We are playing a huge economic role.

MEANWHILE, BOAN is set to hold its first yearly b-convention on barge operations in Nigeria. The event is scheduled to hold on August 24, 2021 at the Marriott Hotel, Ikeja GRA, Lagos State.

Dignitaries expected at the ceremony include Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, who is the special guest of honour, while the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is the chief host and Chairman, Mission To Seafarers, Adebayo Sarumi, the chairman of the occasion among others.
